Cavalry and cannnons should be placed outside the fort. The enemies will just rush mindlessly to the flag and it is easy to soften them up with musket fire as they descent from the walls and finish them up in melee. If I am defending a fort (which I try to avoid at all costs and which rarely happens), I just place all my infantry units in the inner courtyard of the fort around the flagpole and let the enemy take the walls. I siege the city, wait for the enemy to sally forth and beat them on open ground and then just autoresolve/demand surrender to get rid of the remaining defenders. Siege battles are a different thing but I don't generally have to play them in my campaigns. The game plays very smoothly that way and the units are easy to control. Empire: Total War takes the Total War franchise to the eighteenth century Age of Enlightenment a time of political upheaval, military advancements, and radical thought, captured in stunning detail in the Empire: Total War. I only use "fire at will" for the infantry and the cavalry and manual fire on the ground for the artillery. I always select the units I want to move and then righ click and drag to precisely place them in another spot. Never ever command your units to fire at an enemy unit. Never ever control your units by just clicking around.
